Time To Upgrade From Windows XP to… Drumroll Please…

When Windows Vista came out we encouraged people to stick with Windows XP  rather than upgrade to Vista.  We continued to build our computers with Windows XP on them as Microsoft continued to sell it.  It was odd because each “end of life” date for Windows XP being sold on the shelves kept getting extended.  It was obvious that Microsoft realized how bad their Vista was.  At the time, we dubbed it “Windows Millennium 2.0″ because if you can remember, Windows ME was also a horrible operating system.  They went from Windows 98, which was great at the time, to a bomb in Windows ME.

How to Easily Create Your Facebook Cover Photo

You may have noticed that Facebook has been rolling out its new timeline feature. There are definitely mixed reviews. My own opinion is that the new “cover photo” option required on the timeline is great! It ends up looking more like your typical website with a header on the top and all of the content below. However, I am not a fan of how the content below the cover photo is displayed. It seems very convoluted.

Securing Your Personal Data Before Tossing Your Gadget

You have an older iPhone and the newest one is looking great to you.  You finally are up for an upgrade and decide you want to pass the old one down to your kid. Or maybe you have a laptop that is slower than you want it to be so you decide it is time to upgrade to a new laptop and sell this one to a relative.

Top 20 Free Android Apps

If you aren’t familiar with “Android” then it is likely you do not have a smartphone or a tablet…yet! Android is the popular alternative to the iPhone and is owned by Google. In the computer world you basically have three players: Microsoft Windows, Apple Mac OS, and Linux. It is very similar in the mobile world. Soon Windows will be unveiling its new Operating System that will span across all types of devices.  Microsoft owns Windows and Apple owns the Mac OS. The interesting thing about Linux is that the source code is available for anyone to change for their own needs and that is basically what Google did to create Android.

I intended this article to be a “Top 10″ list but it changed into a “Top 20″ with 3 honorable mentions (not counting the social networking apps that I list but don’t count.) It really is hard to narrow this list down because I have a lot of great apps that I’ve found for both my android phone and my android tablet. To start off let me list some free social networking apps that everyone should have and thus I will not include in this list.

How Your Smartphone Photos Put You at Risk

If you are like me, you use your smartphone to do everything. This also includes taking photos of just about everything including my kids! But did you know that by doing this, you are putting yourself and possibly your kids at risk? I’m not the type to attempt to make people scared when they shouldn’t be, but this is something that we all should be alarmed about.

Have you ever heard of geotagging? It essentially means that with every smartphone photo you take, your location is being added to the photo’s information. This is great if you want to always remember where you took your photos! It is not so great if you want to keep your home, child’s daycare, or the parks you frequently visit private from possible online stalkers.

10 Ways to Be On Your Best Behavior…Email Style

Email is a very substantial aspect of most everyone’s life. It is such a great way to communicate so many different things.  Whether you use it to send family updates, daily jokes, business correspondence, or newsletters, it is cheap and quick!  But there are some things that people either don’t know or just don’t think about when sending out their emails.  Hopefully we can tackle some of those things in this list.

Cutting the Cords

It is becoming more and more popular to toss your paid subscription to satellite and cable companies and either going back to the antenna or moving to internet based TV.  Some, like me, are doing both!

I am a self-made expert in this subject since I am one of the many who have jumped ship and cut the cords!

I decided that I didn’t need all of the extra channels and costs involved with my satellite dish.  I am a huge NFL fan and was getting the Sunday Ticket which showed every game that was being played.

Time to Change Your Internet?

It is great to have options when it comes to Internet service providers.  Locally our high-speed providers are Charter Cable, Verizon DSL, Clear, Comcast Cable, and AT&T (along with the various wireless phone carriers that offer mobile broadband).  Each provider offers similar features but a variety of speeds. Most providers give you free email and sometimes they’ll throw in a security package at no extra charge.

Have You Given Up On Google+?

Chances are you’ve heard of the new social networking site by Google called Google+.  But it is also likely you either haven’t tried it because you are happy with facebook or you’ve tried it and are having trouble finding your friends on it!  Well join the crowd!

I see Google+ as a different beast than Facebook.  I see G+ as something that will allow groups of people with similar interests to connect to each other.   Circles is a new creation by Google that you’ll probably start seeing creep up in other areas such as android phones and I’ve already seen it a little on GMail which are Google’s mobile operating system and Google’s popular email program.  Circles allow you to put people in different categories or groups and post messages that only those groups can see.

An Honest Comparison Between Mac and Windows

I have to confess, I’ve been part of, and even started many “which is better” debates. I’ve been an owner of both types and fix both types as well so I feel that I can give an honest and credible review or comparison of each. Today I want to look at four main categories to compare. Each category is what we typically hear users mention when discussing the pros and cons of each.
