Taking care of your computer on a regular basis

We’ve always said that depending on your usage, computers need to be tuned up every 6-Weekly computer maintenance12 months by a professional. But there are things that you should be doing on both a weekly and a monthly basis to keep your technology running as good as possible.

First, let’s tackle weekly maintenance.

You should always back up your most important data on a weekly basis at the very least. It doesn’t matter if you are a business with a critical Quickbooks company file or a home user that just uploaded photos or saved some homework. Find a good backup solution that you are comfortable with. We always prefer redundancy and recommend both an external storage drive and a cloud backup solution.

Also, do a disk cleanup. There are programs out there like CCleaner that’ll do this for you, but you can use the built-in Windows Disk Cleanup utility that comes with your PC. If you have a Mac you can use Disk Utility.

Lastly, you need to run your anti-virus and any other security program. Most of these programs will run by themselves, but you should always run it manually as well.

Your monthly maintenance is a bit more time consuming, but always worth the hassle.

You’ll want to defragment your hard drive.  Set yourself a reminder to do this on a specific day each month.

Also, update all of your software.  You’ll want to make sure your operating system is always up-to-date as well as third party software like Java and Adobe Flash. Keeping this all up-to-date limits your exposure to being exploited by hackers.

Lastly, you’ll want to run a hard drive check. Windows comes with a neat little disk checking utility that will try to fix file system errors and even attempt to recover bad sectors on the hard drive.  In Windows, you can find utility by right clicking on your C drive and choosing “Tools.”

Preventing issues from occurring keeps your technology costs down in the long run. We do offer a service that takes care of all of this at a low monthly cost. If this is something you are interested in, please let us know.
